Day 24, 04/15/10

On day twenty-four of in class we worked with the smart board agian. We worked in groups and found lesson plans that would be good to teach. My group chose to find a good math site. Using smart boards in the classroom helps teachers to meet Standard 2a. Teachers design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incoporate digitial tools and resources to promote student learning and creavity.

Day 23, 4/13/10

On day twenty-thre of class we learned about using smartboards in the classroom and read this article about smart boards. We had to find an example of why we thought smart boards might worth the money. The example I found was :

Interactive whiteboards affect learning in several ways. They serve to raise the level of student engagement in a classroom, motivate students and promote enthusiasm for learning. In at least one case, the addition of an interactive whiteboard positively influenced student attendance.

In my personal opinion from the experience I have had with smart boards they arent worth the money or trouble.

Web Quest

My Web Quest.

Day 22 4/8/10

Day twenty-two of class was an out of classroom work day. We had to conintue to wrok on our WebQuest pages. In real life classrooms if students were to complete this webquest they are developing 21st century skills in Learning and Innovation Skills.

Day 21, 4/6/10

On day twenty-one of class we worked on our WebQuests with Google sites. We made changes to our WebQuests and corrected what we thought were ways to improve it. The ISTE-NETS Standard that fits this project standard is 1d 1. (Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity) model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments. I'm not sure how I would use this in my future classroom, but if I did figure out a way I think it would be a very good projects to help the students get interested in whatever we are doing.

Day 20, 4/1/10

On day twenty of class we had to choose a pre-made webquest that will modify for our own use. The webquest that I found, that I am going to modify is called A Changing Earth. One change that I am going to make to this webquest is to add differnt pictures and graphic to it. Also the task on this webquest is for lower grade level so I will make it a more detail task. The CSO that my webquest will help students meet is demonstrateing knowledge, understanding and applications of scientific facts, concepts, principles, theories and models as delineated in the objectives.

Day 19 3/30/10

On day nineteen of class we got into groups of four and each played a role to look at different webquests. The role I played was "The Altitudinist": Higher level thinking is everything to you. There's too much emphasis on factual recall in schools today. The only justification for bringing technology into schools is if it opens up the possibility that students will have to analyze information, synthesize multiple perspectives, and take a stance on the merits of something. You also value sites that allow for some creative expression on the part of the learner. To me a web quest should deliver the most information to analyze and do somthing with it. In my opinion, the Unraveling the Underground Railroad was the best site. It gave you alot of important information and what you need to know to get the task done. I think this webquest goes along with ISTE NET standard 3b: locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. They have to research alot of information in a varity of ways and work as a group. This would be a good project for my future classroom beucase it helps the students to work together and solve a problem with their own creative ideas.

Day 18 3/25/10

On day eighteen of class we watched the digital photostories that were created by the Fairview Middle School students, that followed along with there stories we helped them with. I think that creating a digital story helps students to meet Standard 1b : Creativity and Innovation. Creating a digital story fits under this category because it helps them to create original works as a means of personal or group expression.

Day 17, 3/23/10

On day 17 of class we made a mini-biography for our Ning profile we also joined Bruceton Five Ning site. Making a mini biography in a social network site helps students to use technology as a tool to communicate information and it helps your classmates to know you better. Our mini-bio consisted of our astrological sign, someone who shares our birthday, an important event on that day in history, and the weather on that day, what our first and last names mean. And we had to have pictures to go along with our facts. This activity involves a number of different websites and search engines to find information about our birthdays.

Day 15 3/9/10

On day fifteen of class we looked at "Deconstructing Arnold" magazine cover which shows Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed as a politician and as an action hero, and how he was portrayed differently of the magazine covers. We talked about the different ways the covers convey a message and we will use this information to create our own magazine cover. (my cover posted below) This covers the Media Literacy standard that says: Examine how individuals interpret messages differently, how values and points of view are included or excluded, and how media can influence beliefs and behaviors.

Day 14 3/4/10

On day fourteen of class we made a wordle based on Web 2.0. We used the program Jing to capture the image of the wordle. (Posted below) This activity fits under Creativity and Innovation by creating new and worthwhile ideas. It also helps us to be open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives; incorporate group input and feedback. This would be a good activity to get students engaged in learning the different jobs or other topic that a subject like chemistry would help with.

Wordle

Day 13, 2/25/10

On day thirteen of class we finished collaborative story writing with 5th graders and used personal bookmarks on Blackboard to create bookmarks of the websites we use alot and think are important. I just bookmarked Web Mail, bookmarking it makes it alot simpler to get too. The standards that we had to use this week were from 21st Century Framework and how bookmarks prompt Information Literacy Skills. I think it does this by letting you access an abundance of information, being more organized, and allowing you to get to the websites faster. I use my google bookmarks and favorites every time I get on the Internet, I would be lost without them. Bookmarks make everything alot easier to get to and you don't have to remember a bunch of websites URLs.

Day 12, 2/25/10

On day twelve of class we created a Hypermedia Quiz on PowerPoint. We came up with our own question, mine was "Which of these animals is extinct?" (the PowerPoint is posted below in previous post) This is different from your average PowerPoint presentation because it is interactive. The students have different answer they can chose, you click on the two answers in the quiz, and they will each take you to a different page (either Sorry try again or Congratulations). We also had to add visual and sound effects to my quiz. The standards that we had to use this week were from 21st Century Framework. The standard that I think that fits this activity is Life & Career Skills standard, under Productivity & Accountability, Produce Results. It says that students will have to follow directions to produce high quality results. I'm not sure how I would use this in my future classroom, but it defiantly is a fun interactive way to quiz students.

Day 11, 2/23/10

On day eleven of class,we had a story collaboration with 5th grade students from Fairveiw Middle School. The students at the middle school started a story then we had to continue it, I had a to continue a story with Indian 3. The standards that we had to use this week were from 21st Century Framework. The standard that I think that fits this activity is Life and Career Skills under Flexibility and Adaptability by incorporating feedback effectively. I think that this would be a good activity to use in my classroom because, it can help my students with communicating with each other and helping each other with their work and they can even communicate with different students from other schools.

Day 10, 2/18/10

On day ten of class, we worked on the Photo Story, after posting our Photo Story we had to comment on the other student's Photo Stories. Then we had to posted our final photo story to our blog. I already did this on day nine.

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Day 9 2/16/10

On the ninth day of class we had to make a photo story about teaching and teachers. We had to included quotes about teaching, photos, music and text or narration. The quotes I used were, "A teacher affects eternity,he can never tell where his influence stops." -Henry Adams and "By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn." - Latin Proverb. We then had to save the photo story as a .wmv and upload it to YouTube, and embed the YouTube video in our Blog (posted below in previous post). I have never used Photo Story for windows before, but I have used Windows Movie Maker many times and these to programs have most of the same concepts. The standard that this activity meets is Standard 4A. 4A states, teachers advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

Day 8 2/11/10

Day eight of class was another snow day. :) So we once again did all of our assignments online. An activity I have done in my out-of-school life that has prepared me to meet a ISTE NETS-T is that I work at an after school program at Blackshere Elm. The students that attend this program rage from kindergarten to fourth grade. I have to comply with students ages 5-11, so I have to change my methods for each grade that I help. The standard that this activity meets is Standard 4B. Standard 4B states, teachers address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources. I can explain something to a fourth grader one way, but I have to remember that a kindergartener might not understand, so I have to constantly changing teaching strategies.

Day 7 2/9/10

Day seven of class was a snow day! :) So we had to do all of our assignments online. An activity that I did in my K-12 schooling experience that helped me meet one of the ISTE NET, was in Pre-Cal in High School. The teacher has us taking these online test of our skills to help us get ready for the ACTs. The standard that this activity meets was Standard 2B. 2B states, teachers develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.

Day 6 2/4/10

On the sixth day of class we answered questions from 5th graders in California over Skype. Their questions were about internet safety and autobiographical writing. My questions were:

15. Should you lie about your profile just to sound "cool"? No, you should not lie just to sound cool. First of all lying isn't cool to beginning with, and if you do lie on your profile in get caught in that lie, it would be very embarrassing.

16. What is an online predator? An online predator an internet user who, who searches the internet looking for children to take advantage of. They exploit vulnerable children or teens. If you come across a person you think is a predator you should tell a trusted adult immediately, and never ever meet with someone in person you just know from the internet without talking to a trusted adult first.

This is a great use of technology to communicate with people both from anywhere, locally, across the country, or even across the world. You could use this technology to communicate with students in your class, with anyone that would be helpful to the lesson. This is a good way to use the ISTE-NET standard 3C; communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.

Day 5 2/2/10

On day five of class we used Google Docs to create surveys that could be answered, and the the answers saved into a google spreadsheet to make a graph. (seen below in previous post). Each survey was two questions, mine was about favorite season and favorite music genre. Then we posted the survey and graph on our blogs. This activity demonstrated ISTE standard 3 by allowing us to collaborate with our peers to collect and analyze information.

Day 4, 1/28/10

On day four of class we joined a discussion group called ,Web 2.o and Schools - Discussion , on Facebook. The discussion group is a place where the class can talk with each other and voice their opinion in an informal setting. By joining this group this assignemnt falls under the ISTE NETS' standard three, Model Digital-Age Work and Learning, teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Standard 3B&C states: teachers collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation and communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats. In my classroom I don't think I'll use Facebook. I consider Facebook a more of a personal social network to connect with people not a teaching object. If I had to use Facebook, I would consider using a lesson like this in a classroom were students can have a help discussion group.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Day 3, 1/26/10

On day three of class we joined a online site for teachers called Classroom 2.0. This is a website that helps teachers connect with other teachers and discuss many topics and how they are integrating technology into their classroom. This assignment falls under standard three, Model Digital-Age Work and Learning, teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Standard 3B states: teachers collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. And could also fall under Standard 5A, which states: teachers participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning. I would use this website in my classroom to interact with other chemistry teachers and see how they use all these new technologies to help the students learn and be more interested in chemistry.

Day 2, 1/21/10

On day two in class we used Google Docs. to create a resume and publish it online. I've have made a mock resume before but this is the first time I used an online template and published to the internet were I could pull it up anytime, anywhere. By doing this resume it helps show how the ISTE's Educational Technology Standards for Teachers can be used in the classroom. The standard that goes along with this is, number one,Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity. Standard 1b states: engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. I would use this project in my classroom by having my students make mock resumes to accepted in sometype of science research program.

Day 1, 1/19/10

On the first day of class we learn about gmail and set up this blog you are reading right now. I am slowly learning how these blogs and how they help with the ISTE's Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. This blog fall under standard three, Model Digital-Age Work and Learning. Standard 3B states: "Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.". We used this blog to create a wordle with Oakland, California students.

Post Numero Uno - Introduction

Hi! My name is Siera Efaw. I'm from Mannington, WV. I'm a junior at Fairmont State University in Fairmont,WV; majoring in Secondary Ed. specializing in Chemistry/General Science. Some of my hobbies include reading, enjoying the outdoors, photography and soccer, I can’t play soccer at all, but I very much like watching a game, especially live.

I've never had a blog before, this is my first blog entry, ever. I am creating this blog for my EDUC 2201, Instructional Technology class. I don't really have much knowledge when it comes to blogs either. The only blog I can think of is the 'The Julie/Julia Project' from the book/movie "Julie and Julia". Hope to learn all about them as the semester goes on. :)
